Leanna Cruz Drops Gutierrez Twice in Decision Win

Despite no amateur boxing experience, Leanna Cruz has done well for herself, coming into tonight’s contest with an 11-0 record. Cruz is known for her speed, technical skill, and fight IQ while in the ring. Cruz last fought in June, defeating Regina Chavez despite nearly getting stopped early in the bout.

Despite being just 20 years old, Rubi Gutierrez already has 12 fights as a pro boxer. She also fought in over 30 amateur contests, and she was the 2023 Olympic Festival Champion. Gutierrez enters tonight 8-3-1, most recently scoring a decision win over Maria De Los Angeles Sanchez Aguilar in April.

ROUND 1

Cruz takes to the center. Left hand flashed by Gutierrez. Cruz flashing the jab. Left hands from both women. Gutierrez misses the right. Gutierrez misses the left but lands the right. Gutierrez wants to get inside and land on the body. Left hand by Gutierrez. Cruz with a left hand. A series of body shots land for Gutierrez. Left hand inside, followed by a right by Cruz. Gutierrez with a combination. Left hand by Cruz. Gutierrez with a combination. The two trade. Gutierrez misses a combination. Both land on the body. A couple of left hands by Cruz, and then she lands a right hand that rocks Gutierrez! Cruz with some follow-up shots on a roped Gutierrez. Gutierrez gets away and now lands on the inside. ROUND 4

Gutierrez landing a series of left hands, trying to take control. Gutierrez working speedy combinations, and we have a bit of a fire fight near the ropes now! Cruz with a solid combination to the body, and Gutierrez gets knocked down by a left uppercut to the body! Cruz back to pressuring now. Cruz is all over Gutierrez on the ropes. Gutierrez is trying to fight back, but Cruz is keeping it up. Two-punch combination by Gutierrez. Cruz fires a combination. A couple of punches by Gutierrez. Gutierrez with a combination. ROUND 5

Combination by Gutierrez, but Cruz is still coming forward. A couple of left hands and a right from Gutierrez. A couple of right hands by Cruz. Cruz backing Gutierrez to a corner, thanks especially to her stinging right hand. A couple of solid body shots. Cruz rips to the body again, and it’s another knockdown! Gutierrez fires off a combination to try and take control. Cruz continues a combination against the ropes. Gutierrez is moving. The two trade upstairs. The ref looks like he wants to stop this soon, but Gutierrez survives this round.

ROUND 6

Jabs from both women to start. Cruz pressures already, and we have some exchanging. Right hand to the body by Cruz. Cruz is focused on the body, trying to get a finish there. A combination to the body. A series of uppercuts to the body. Left hand by Cruz. Gutierrez fires off a couple of shots. Counter left hook by Cruz. Gutierrez with another combination. Gutierrez with a left hand. Gutierrez looks for her own body-focused combination. Cruz looks to answer. Gutierrez ripping combinations. Cruz, meanwhile, fires off her own, landing a left hook and an uppercut to the body.

ROUND 7

Cruz landing with the left. Cruz appears to be swollen on her face. Gutierrez is trapped in the corner, and the two are exchanging quite a bit now. A couple of right hands by Gutierrez. Body shots from both women. A couple of right hands by Gutierrez. Cruz with a right hand. Left straight by Gutierrez. Cruz with a right and left. Body shots for both. Strong left hook for Cruz in another combination. Cruz with another left hand. Cruz working the body on the inside. Right hand by Gutierrez. Left hand by Cruz.

ROUND 8

An exchange from both women, but Gutierrez takes over with combinations. Now a combination from Cruz. Now one from Gutierrez. Cruz with one! Cruz landing big shots against the ropes! Cruz lands with a right hand to the body. Right hand by Gutierrez lands upstairs. Gutierrez misses an overhand right. Right hand by Cruz. Left hand by Gutierrez. Cruz firing off combinations again. Gutierrez looks unsteady. Cruz lands with a right hand to the body. Now a couple of lefts.
